what happens if a dog eats a tick

If you own a dog and live in a wooded area, you already know how easily it is for your dog to contact one or more ticks. The problem with ticks is they carry diseases, which can infect your dog. Preventing ticks in the first place is the best measure, because ticks embed and lock their heads into their host (your dog), yanking them out is often not a good idea because it leaves the head inside your dog's skin, which can cause irritation.

Lyme Disease

This is one of the diseases that dogs can contract via a tick bite, in fact, your dog is near 100 times more likely to contract Lyme disease than a human is if bitten by the same infected tick. Lyme disease in dogs can be mild or severe, depending on the number of tick bites and the size of the dog. A small dog can go into renal failure via on infected tick bite.

Symptoms of advanced Lyme disease include :
Lameness or arthritis that can be accompanied by loss of appetite
Swollen joints that feel very warm when you touch them
Leg pain or pain throughout the body
Fatigue and swollen lymph nodes
Stiff gait

While Lyme disease can strike anywhere, it appears more common in the northeastern, north-central, mid-Atlantic, and California.

Dog Ehrlichiosis

This disease is spread via the brown tick and early symptoms may not be apparent until the disease has progressed, which can take years to manifest.
The most common of advanced symptoms include:
Runny eyes and or nose
Fever
No appetite
Weight loss from not eating
Lymph nodes may be swollen
Possibility of nose bleeds
Visible bruising on the tummy or gums
Swelling of the legs may also be present

Dog ehrlichiosis can occur anywhere in the United States, but is more prone to the southwestern as well as the Gulf Coast regions.

Taking Necessary Precautions

One of the best defenses against any tick diseases that your dog may pick up is to prevent it from occurring in the first place. There are monthly treatments you can give your dog that is applied between the shoulder blades once per month, which will keep your dog protected from ticks biting them.

While flea and tick medications do carry their own risks, the risk of being infected with a tick disease may outweigh the small chance that your dog may have an allergic reaction the tick medication. Most dogs do tolerate the tick medication very well, if you happen to have a very sensitive dog, try using natural products such as shampoos and sprays.

And we tell them
If a tick carrying diseases is ingested, the dog may get sick but it will not be infected by tick infection because Dogs have a better stomach lining and immunity to diseases than we do.

Finally
If you have discovered ticks on your dog and he or she is mostly in the house, you should to get rid of it immediately.
